In the 90s, a plural called Vickis coined the 'midcontinuum' for the experience of being somewhere between a singlet and having florid DID. It was based on a model that saw dissociation as a spectrum spanning from more "everyday" experiences like daydreaming to more "disordered" experiences like dissociative disorders.
Midcontinuum encompasses a broad range of plural experiences: DDNOS (which is now OSDD and partial DID), less florid DID, dissociative parts outside of dissociative disorders, inner children, endogenic and non-traumagenic plurality, etc. It's essentially any experience of "being more than one" that isn't your traditional, full-blown DID!
A fun term that some midcontinuum plurals used is 'singtiple' — a combination of singlet and multiple! It was coined by Yavie who used it to describe "not being quite 'multiple', but not only 'singleton' either" (first paragraph). The implication of being both singlet and multiple is very relatable to me and I'll get into that later.
There were some folks who found the midcontinuum to be too simplistic or clinical. Eventually, the term 'median' was coined by non-traumagenic plurals to be more removed from dissociation and it replaced 'midcontinuum' in its popularity.
When I was discovering my plurality, I never heard or saw 'midcontinuum' or 'singtiple' being used anywhere. I only discovered these terms through my hobby of archiving plural history. I'm sad they don't see much usage anymore because I actually love these terms. Maybe that's funny for someone who lived most of their life with full-blown DID to say. Now that we're fused, though, the two terms really resonate with us...especially singtiple!
In the present day, we feel a lot like a combination of multiple and singlet. We aren't strictly one or the other. We don't care how contradicting it sounds, we legitimately feel like both and we find our experiences reflected in the old musings of midcontinuums and singtiples.
"We're like a mosaic… all part of the whole picture, but individuals as well. Take one of us away, and the whole is diminished."
— Mosiac
I'm left wondering, what happened to the singtiples? Where did they go? It used to be such a big, beautiful community. I wish I had gotten to be a part of it back in its prime.
When I think about it, I also notice less and less median systems these days. Are there just more non-medians lately, or is that community shrinking too? Am I just not looking in the right places...?
The plural spectrum isn't being forgotten, right?
Sometimes I feel like there's too much emphasis on the more "multiple" side of the plural spectrum. Too many times I've gotten dirty looks and rude comments for calling my headmates 'parts' even though terminology like that has always been so common within the median/midcontinuum/singtiple experience. Parts, facets, fragments, modes, sides, selves... It should be okay for someone to use these terms if they like them. It doesn't make them any less plural.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with being a system of completely separate people, but it just isn't the only way plurality can look. Plurality is so much more diverse than that! It's not and it's never been just one thing!
I hope that's never, ever forgotten!
